DRAGON DETAILS

It takes some convincing on my part to prevent a fight between B.R. and everyone else as we get settled in the space in front of his cave for some actual rest. It’s even worse since I’m not harboring particularly warm and fuzzy thoughts about the deal-maker, but I don’t want anyone getting hurt. And I need answers that only B.R. can give me. He won’t be doing that if he’s busy trying to fricassee my friends.

Me, a peacekeeper. Who would’ve guessed?

Once B.R. gets the captured supernaturals reliably contained for the night, I intend to have a conversation, by force if necessary. While I’m waiting, the dragon and I get cozy.

The Bone Reader may not be much for visitors in his home, but the others thought ahead. Nahum and I are snuggled up in a tent, canoodling, as the kids might say. Well, kids from over a century ago.

I roll off the dragon, thoroughly warmed up even after throwing off the blankets he brought along. Nahum was voracious. It was like he was terrified I might disappear in the middle of things. Not an irrational fear, all things considered. Even now, he reaches out to pull me back toward him, and I settle my head against his bare chest.

“Angling for a second round?” I tease over my shoulder, already half-asleep. “Because I’m game if you are.”

“No. You’ve been through a lot. Get some sleep. We can discuss everything after we’ve gotten out of here.”

My ears perk up, and now I’ll never be able to sleep. The concern over whatever he’s holding back slaps against my intuition in waves. Along with the prickly sense of frustration.

Oh, hell no. We are not going to sleep with unfinished business.

“Discuss what?”

“Never, it’s really nothing urgent. It can wait.”

“But you’re upset! And I can tell some of it is coming in my direction.”

“I’m not upset at you. I’m just torn up over this whole situation.”

He’s still holding back. I can feel the pent-up slew of emotions. What I’ve gotten so far is just a taste; he’s still reining in most of what’s upsetting him. Call me someone who pokes the bear, or the dragon, but once I get on something I just can’t let it go. At least not until it’s resolved, or destroyed. I’m like a dog with a bone, although anyone who used that reference to my face would be met with a set of claws or fang-filled jaws.

“Nahum. We are not resting until you get this off your chest. Please, be honest with me.”

He lets out a sigh that goes for several seconds, looking away from me at the corner of the tent, the edge of the blanket, anywhere that isn’t my face.

“Very well. If that’s what you want. I can deny my mate nothing. When you died, I felt all the things I told you before. But I also felt shame, and fury. At myself, because I was stuck in a nightmare and unable to save you. And, yes, even though I know it’s not fair, at you.
